Kowai Onna a.k.a. Unholy Women, is an anthology of short horror stories from Japan. Released in 2006, the anthology consists of three half-hour long segments, each story uniquely different.
The first story Rattle Rattle (Kata-kata) has a wicked looking lady in red, and I mean waaaaay creepy-scary. This gal makes the Ringu girl look like a Revlon model.
The story's about a young woman named Kanako who hears a strange rattling sound one night while outside her apartment building, and when she looks up, WHAM! She gets KO'ed yet wakes up seemingly unhurt. But soon after, the scary woman in red begins to stalk her.
The story is really good up until the end, but then kind of flops on its face. Still, it's the scariest of the three and worth a watch.
Then there's Steel (Hagane). It's just... freakin' out there. When I wasn't wondering WTF?! I was LMAO.
The story centers on a girl, Hagane, who wears a burlap sack over most of her body. (And you thought a bag over the head meant ugly!) Her big brother Tetsu sets her up on a blind date with his shy co-worker Mikio, but oddly enough doesn't mention the sack. Needless to say, shy guy Mikio is a little put off by the bag lady, but the bag is the least of his worries. Little sis takes a liking to him... and she likes it rough. You'll see what I mean when you watch it. o_O
The 3rd story The Inheritance (Uketsugu mono) is about a newly divorced young mom named Saeko who takes her 7yr. old son Michio back home to her mother's out in the middle of BFJ (bumf#%k Japan) and inadvertently unlocks a secret family curse kept hidden away in a store house.
This is the slowest of the three, but still decent. The little boy, played by Suga Kenta, is what makes the story, acting circles around the other performers. And major kudos for one particular scene. The kid kept a straight face throughout, which is more than I could have done. He asks the question we've all probably wanted to ask our moms at one time or another...
Over all I liked Kowai Onna. It was like Tales from the Crypt gone Asian. Mediocre in parts, but definitely entertaining. I give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
